This freakin' awesome customized banner was made by CHA!NSAW. (I'm trying out a new fanfic and style. I hope you enjoy it. ^_^) Blinding rain crashed down over the forgotten hill as a lonely car made its way down the winding gravel road. Four occupants sat inside, fighting over a map and the last remnants of a large bag of ranch potato chips. There were altogether three young women and one young man. They sped at indiscernible speeds up the slippery slope towards a lake house at the top of the hill. The youngest, a recent college dropout named Jenni, read the map for the young man that was driving. "You're going too fast," she mumbled as she slipped off her black flip-flops and curled her legs onto the dirty grey seat. "Do you even know the address for this place?" "Beats me," answered the boy at the wheel. "All Jon told me was that we were supposed to meet at the top of the hill. He said that the house was the only one in this part of the mountain." "Hand me the f***ing chips!" shouted one of the girls in the back. "I bought them so I should get the last one," said the other as she stuck out her tongue. "Besides, you ate half of the bag." "I thought when we came on this trip that we decided food was community property," the first girl retorted. "Community," replied the second. "That means that we all get to have some." "Would you two shut up?" Jenni asked, following the road with her eyes. "Gosh, you'd think there was a time vortex between us and the back seat and you'd slipped back to kindergarten." "You're just jealous that you didn't get to ride with Spencer," the second girl teased. "Ladies, ladies," said the young man that was driving. "Just calm down until we get to the house. It's pouring down rain outside and I'm having enough trouble concentrating without your s***." A hush fell over the interior of the car. The four continued down the road in silence as the rain began to pour harder. A flash of lightning crashed into a tree about half a mile in front of the moving vehicle. The charred tree fell with a crash into the middle of the road, blocking the party of four from moving on towards their destination. "S***," the young man mumbled under his breath as he tried to steer the car to a halt. The slippery road made it impossible to stop at the speed that he was driving. "Everyone hold on, I'm putting on the emergency brake." The car screeched and swerved up the hill towards the fallen tree and rammed into the object at a final speed of 30 MPH. It was only by luck that a fire didn't start in the engine, as the front of the car was so wet that it prevented any such occurrence. "Mi've mot a hairmag enf mah pace," Jenni mumbled. "What did you say?" asked the driver as he pushed his airbag back and began examining the passengers for injuries. He pulled Jenni's airbag back and took her left arm in his hand. "I said I've got an airbag in my face," she answered. "No, you don't," he said, giving her a funny look as he checked her arm for bruises. "Do you feel okay?" "You mean besides the high-speed impact?" asked the first girl in the back seat. "You're not helping, Kii." Jenni replied, rubbing her temples. "Well excuse me, but I might be injured too," Kii said harshly as she checked the girl in the seat next to her. "Chaynee's unconscious! OH S***! OH S***! She's unconscious!" "Do you see any blood?" asked the driver as he crawled out of his belt and leaned towards the back seat. "No, there isn't any blood..." Kii answered. "She must have hit her head on the back of Jenni's seat on impact." "Okay, then she'll probably be alright," he said, plopping back into his seat with a sigh. "The rain seems to be letting up now." "It looks like the house is only a mile or so up the road," Jenni said, holding up the map. "Should we go for it?" "We might as well," said the driver. "It's no good staying here." The young group trudged along the muddy path with their luggage. Their shoes made the most horrid spluttering noises as their feet sloshed through the wet floor beneath them. The young driver carried Chaynee along on his back as he led the group up the hill. It was not a silent trip, however, as Jenni and Kii fought during the entire trek.
"Ugh, I can't believe that you made me carry all of my bags," Kii moaned, pulling her rolling suitcase through the soft soil. It left two pitted tracks along the road. "Half of my clothes are probably ruined by now." "We could always wash them," Jenni replied, hurling her suitcase over a large stone in the middle of the path. "How the heck am I supposed to get my bag over that?" asked Kii. "I can't lift that much weight." "Well then, I guess you'll have to go back to the car," came Jenni's reply with a smirk. "It would save us the trouble of listening to your whining." "Did you hear what she said?" screamed Kii in a huff as she threw her bag over the rock. "What is that racket?" mumbled Chaynee as she opened her eyes. "Where... where are we?" "We had a minor accident," answered the driver as he carried Chaynee along. "We've had to abandon my car for the time." "Oh..." she looked around at the trees. "Did you hit something again?" "Well," he sighed. "Yeah. Wait, don't you remember?" "Remember what?" she asked. "Last thing I can recall I was fighting with blondie over the chips." Overhead the sky began to grow a dark shade of grey. The wind started to pick up, tossing leaves across the path in a frenzy. Soon the sun was blotted out by the cold, wet clouds that had begun to cover the entire hill in a thick vaporous blanket of dingy white fog. The quartet hurried along the path as fast as their legs could move them, hoping to reach the lake house before the impending storm. Unfortunately it was too late. Try as they might to make it up the steep inclination, the ground was too slippery for them to run. They had to resort to a steady pace in order for their feet to stay grounded in the increasingly sticky mud. Just before the heaviest winds began to blow they spotted the house up ahead. It was about ten yards away from their location. The group quickly ran towards the front door. "Watch out, Kii!" Jenni screamed to the frontrunner as a tree came crashing down just in front of the steps to the porch. "We'll have to get inside another way!" the driver shouted as he ran around the side of the house slipping between the pressure of the girl on his back and the slick ground below his feet. "I think I see an entrance to the basement." "Come on, Kii," Jenni whispered to the frightened girl as she grabbed her hand and dragged her down into the open doors of the basement. Once inside, Jenni quickly helped Chaynee onto a chair as the driver closed the doors and used an interior lock to keep them shut. "Is everyone alright?" he asked, looking at the three soaked girls and the muddy mess of suitcases on the floor. "I... I almost died out there," Kii whispered. "That tree was only a few feet in front of me." "Let's be glad that you're still around to piss Jenni off then," he chuckled, helping her to her feet. "Are you going to be alright, Chay?" Jenni asked the disoriented girl. "I think so," she answered with a half-smile. The light at the top of the basement stairs leading into the house came on. The door swung open on its hinges with a screeching squeak. The sound of footsteps began to echo through the basement as the source of the noise stepped into full-view. "D***, Brendon," groaned Ryan as he held up a lantern in order to see the group in a better light. "What the f*** took you so long?" This message has been edited. "It sounds as if you had a rough trip," commented Ryan as he helped the others clean off their suitcases. "I think you're going to love this house though."
"Why do you say that?" Chaynee asked as she took off her wet shoes. She carefully picked up her bag and pulled out the soaked clothes. "Are you kidding?" he asked, looking mildly shocked. "It has everything you need for a wonderful outdoor vacation. There's a dock with a small boat in the back, a rope swing on a good climbing tree, a path for hiking, and the rooms have the most comfortable beds I've ever seen." "Please tell me there's hot water in the showers," sighed Kii. "I have mud in my hair." The group chuckled and walked up the rickety wooden stairs to the main floor. Before them was a large country-style kitchen complete with an iron stove and chicken print curtains. It looked like a picturesque kitchen from an old edition of Better Homes & Gardens. The walls were covered in an old faded paper with rows upon rows of blue Fleur De Lis'. The floors consisted of some sort of light wooden material that creaked when pressure was put on it. "You had better hope you don't gain a lot of weight while you're here, girls," Brendon smirked. "You might fall into the basement." "Just wait until you see the living room." Ryan said, leading the group through a door on the right side of the kitchen. It led straight into a fire-lit living room with hunter green couches surrounding a large fireplace like a giant letter "C". Both the walls and the floors were covered in a dark wood and gleamed as if they had been freshly cleaned that day. "If you don't enjoy the whole ambiance of the country look then you'll probably like the second floor more. It has some modern decorating." "Those couches look like you could sink straight into them," commented Chaynee. "I just want to take a flying leap and plop onto one." "Could we go to the second floor now, Ryan?" Jenni asked. "I'm kind of tired." "And miss out on the grand tour of the library and dining room?" He replied, leaning against the back of one of the couches, "I suppose that would be okay. It's just that this place is so huge and has the most interesting rooms." A flitty young girl came down from the top of the stairs in a purple sundress carrying a pile of books in her hands. "Ryan, you won't believe what I found in the library!" she exclaimed, dropping the books onto the side table next to one of the couches. "There are all sorts of plays, and myths, and novels!" "Um..." Ryan pointed towards the four that were standing in front of him staring. "Oh, sorry," she blushed, waving a hand in the air. "It's nice to see that you're all finally here. The guys have told me such wonderful things about you. I hope you're hungry because I'm planning an amazing dinner for tonight. Oh, and I think we're roasting marshmallows later on. We might even make s'mores too!" "Who are you?" asked Kii, looking a bit frightened at the girl's hyper demeanor. "This is Celeste," answered Ryan, looking mildly annoyed. "Celeste, this is Kii, Chaynee, Brendon, and Jenni." "Hi," she smiled, picking up a book. "You just have to check out the library. It's phenomenal." "Are you always this hyper?" Chaynee asked, giving Jenni a strange look. Jenni returned the favor. "No, I just had three cups of coffee on the way here," Celeste answered. "Jon lied and said that they were decaf." "At least they didn't pull out alcohol this time," Brendon mumbled under his breath, looking away towards a wall. "What was that?" asked Kii with a questioning glance. "Oh look, stairs!" he exclaimed enthusiastically in obvious avoidance. He walked towards them in order to deter the others from questioning Kii's inquiry. "Yeah..." Ryan started. "Let's go upstairs." The group followed Brendon as he made his way up the wooden steps and onto the second floor. Following his eyes, he quickly turned a corner onto the hallway and looked down the floor at the rows of doors. Making a choice, he entered the first one on his left. The group unconsciously followed him inside of the room and looked around. "Leave it to a man to find the bathroom..." Kii mumbled, walking out. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dark Horizons: The Taste of Freedom P.31 Ryfia: The Fanfic Part 13 http://dragcave.net/user/MidnightsMuse Yes, I hopped on the dragonwagon: |
