Chapter One

"I love you, Elle," he whispered into my ear. His hot breath tickling my skin, but not activating the butterflies in my stomache like it should have.
"I love you too, Brendon," I lied. It was too easy to lie now. Most likely due to the fact that I had been lying for so long.
I felt him sigh, pull away, and stand up from his bed. I stayed seated and locked my gaze with the ground; studying the dark wood--I couldn't look at him. I would give myself away for sure if I did.
But after a few moments of silence I decided, reluctantly, to look up. He looked like stone--his expression impassive.
I looked at him quizzically. He sighed again, sitting back on his bed, placing his hands on either side of my face and asked, "Why does it seem like you don't mean it anymore? You do, don't you? I want to know the truth, Elle," he breathed in an almost inaudible whisper.
You won't like it I thought to myself.
"Brendon, I-I. . . ." I couldn't bring myself to say it, but I he understood what I was trying to say.
His hands dropped slowly, and I saw the tears building up in the corner of his doleful eyes. "Wh-why?" he stuttered.
"I. . . ." Why couldn't I just tell him?
"Is-is it because of your father?" he questioned, almost hopefully.
I shook my head. "No, my father has nothing to do with this."
My father had been badgering me to leave Brendon for almost a year now. But I refused to and claimed I was in love. Well, I had thought I was at the time. But in the past few weeks, he had noticed my uneasiness whenever the subject was brought up, and had left me alone about it. I assumed he had caught on.
"Then. . . why?"
I looked down again. I couldn't do it. It was too hard. I should just leave, walk out. Never speak to him again, so I wouldn't feel guilty about the whole ordeal. It make things easier for me,. . . but not for him.
"I-I just. . . don't love you anymore, Brendon," I managed to choke the words out.
Now I felt the tears springing up in my eyes. I didn't want to hurt him; he hadn't done anything to deserve this. He deserved someone better than me. I never deserved him in the first place. He was beautiful and talented and interesting. There wasn't anything special about me. We were the exact opposite; especially in the appearance department. I hardly considered my short, dirty blonde hair, pale skin, and much too skinny body attractive.
My eyes were brown, but nothing in comparision to his chocolate brown eyes--his were like large, sparkling, glass orbs, and mine were. . . flat and too dark, almost black, actually.
I sighed and opened my mouth to speak, but he cut me off.
"There's someone else, then? That's it, isn't it?"
My eyes widened with shock. "No, there is no one else, Brendon!" I snapped. "You really thought I would cheat?"
He looked stunded at my sudden deffensiveness.
"Err, well, no," he stuttered.
I sighed and stood up, "I should leave--"
"No!" he almost screamed, placing his hands on my shoulders and pushed me back down to sit again. "Just-just tell me what I did wrong. I can change!" he said sitting next to me on the bed again. His hands still holding my shoulders.
I shook my head furiously. "No, Brendon. You shouldn't have to change; especially for me. . . . Just. . . let me leave," I pleaded, looking into his dark eyes.
"Why are you doing this? We were meant to be! You know it, Elle! Why?"
"No, we weren't, Brendon," I whispered.
He let his hands drop; his expression was heartbreaking; pain on every one of his perfect features. I could see a tear escaping the corner of his wide, sorrowful eyes.
I looked down at the floor again, and stalked out of his room.
