I wrote this story for my creative writting class. It's a children's story, so I guess it's rated G.
Brendon’s Monster
Hi. My name is Brendon. I’m 6 years old and I go to elementary school. I like dinosaurs, Batman, and gummy worms. My favorite color is blue because it is a boy color. Pink is a girl color, so I don’t like pink.
Can I tell you a secret? I have a monster. Momma says I don’t, but I really do. Trust me. He likes to break things and make a mess. His name is Dexter, he told me so. The only problem is that he only comes out when Momma is not looking. Like last Saturday when it was snack time, Dexter made a mess of the cookies and juice. I told Momma it was Dexter, but she gave me a rag and a broom to clean up. Another time was when I was supposed to clean my room. I was going to clean it, I promise you, but then Dexter wanted to play Star Wars. So instead of picking up my clothes and putting away my LEGOS, Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader battled throughout the galaxy with light sabers. Momma wasn’t so happy when Luke fell off the spaceship and broke the lamp. She cleaned the mess up, but I was sent to take a nap until dinner.
“Why are you taking a nap?” Dexter hopped up on my bed a few minutes later.
“Why do you think?” I snapped. “Well, I have better idea. Come with me and you’ll see!”
“Oh no, I don’t want any more trouble today with you. I’ve had enough,” I told him.
“Trouble?! Ha! You haven’t seen trouble yet! Trust me; I just wanted to show you a map that I found,” Dexter smiled.
“No. I’m going to bed,” I turned my back to him.
“Fine, you can be like that. I’ll just go look for the buried treasure myself,” with that, he hopped off my bed and headed out the door.
I sat in bed for a bit, thinking over what Dexter had said. A map? Buried Treasure? It was all too good for a kid to pass up!
“Wait for me!” I cried down the hall, racing to find the little monster.
“Change your mind?” Dexter laughed.
“If I get into trouble, it’s your entire fault,” I glared at him.
“Fine, but you can’t fight pirates with THAT attitude,”
“Pirates?” This was beginning to be much more than a treasure hunt.
“Of course! Who else do you think I got the treasure map from?” Dexter turned into the kitchen.
I didn’t know. I followed him through the house until we got into a bathroom.
“Ok, this is top secret stuff here so you must promise that you will tell no one about the map,” he stared at me with a dark look.
“I promise,” I just wanted to look at the map.
“I’m being serious here! There are pirates EVERYWHERE! You can’t trust anyone with this information,”
“I said I promise!” I couldn’t wait any longer just to see a piece of paper.
“Alright then,” Dexter then pulled out a rolled up paper from his pocket and laid it out on the toilet.
Before my very eyes was a REAL pirate map! There were caves and islands and rivers and seas that no kid has ever explored. At the end though there was a black X that marked where the treasure was.
“Now, right now we’re right…here,” Dexter pointed to a dot on the map, “And we need to go through the Cave of Darkness, over Mt. Fear, to the Island of Dreams, then we’ll reach the spot,” with that he folded the map and started out the door.
“Are you sure this is safe?” I gulped.
“Of course! Now let’s go,” Dexter exclaimed.
I followed the little monster until we finally reached Island of Dreams. It was a tiring journey, but we made it there safely.
“I told you it was safe,” Dexter had a self-satisfied look on his face.
“Sure…” I walked ahead of him to see what the “island” had in store for us. It was sand, all sand.
“Are you sure this is it?” I turned around to look at Dexter, but he wasn’t there.
“Dexter?” I shouted, but all of a sudden I felt someone jump on me.
“SHHHHHHHH!!!!! They’ll hear you!” Dexter whispered to me. I looked around to see you “They” are, but I saw no one.
“Who? “ I was going to say something else, but Dexter held my head up to the west.
Pirates.
“What do we do?” I looked up to Dexter.
“We fight back,” the monster handed me a sword and charged at the pirates. I followed him.
“AHHHHHHHHHH!!!” I shouted as I ran towards the enemy.
“Brendon?” A common face looked at me with shock.
“Stand back pirate!” I yelled.
“Brendon, its Ryan, you’re standing on my sand castle,” Suddenly, I wasn’t on the Island of Dreams, I was at the sandbox. Ryan, my friend, was there and I was standing on a pile of sand.
“Oh, sorry, have you seen Dexter?” I looked around to see that he was gone.
“Who?” Ryan looked at me confused.
“Dexter of course, I was just playing with him and then he left. He’s a monster you know,”
“Sure…Uh…yeah, Bren, I need to go eat dinner now, I’ll see you later,” Ryan got up and ran home.
I wasn’t sure if Ryan really believed me that I was playing with Dexter, but he was right. It was dinner time. All this adventure was making me hungry. I began to walk back home and realized, I was still in trouble! How was I going to get back into the house without Momma knowing that I snuck out of my nap? I could just walk in, but Momma would know that I left the house. I was stuck in a sticky situation.
“Just climb the tree to your room,”
“What?” I turned around to see Dexter.
“Just climb the tree! No one will know,”
“Where were you when I was talking to Ryan?” I asked.
“Never mind that, climb the tree, get in your room, and you won’t get into trouble!” Dexter started to pull my hand towards home.
He was right, if I climbed the tree I would not get into trouble, but the only problem is that I’m not allowed to climb trees, especially the one near my room.
“I don’t know…” I stood there trying to make a decision.
“C’mon! You don’t want to get into trouble do?” Dexter had a point.
I didn’t know what to do. I really don’t like getting into trouble, but I had broken the rules. If I climbed the tree though, I would get into more trouble than what I am in now if I got caught.
“Brendon?!” A yell came from down the street.
“Too late,” I stood there waiting for Momma to find me.
“Brendon,” Momma found me with my head down, “I thought I told you to take a nap”.
“But Dexter wanted to go on a treasure hunt,” I protested.
Momma stared at me for a bit and then bent down to my height, “Brendon, I don’t know where your friend ‘Dexter’ came from, but he needs to go back. If he stays, I’m afraid you will get into more trouble. You don’t any more trouble do you?”
I shook my head and turned around to go say good-bye, but Dexter was already gone.
“Good. Now let’s go home and have dinner,” Momma smiled.
“Can we have Gummy Worms?”
Fin.
I just want to save you.
