News Flash

Melody opens her locker and rummages through it, looking for her U.S. History textbook. Right when she finds it, someone taps her shoulder, “Melody,” it’s the principal. The girl nods, a strand of strawberry blonde hair falling in front of her face. “I have some terrible news for you. Please, step into my office.” He puts a hand on her shoulder and leads her to his office.

He tells her to take a seat, “Your mom was in an accident today,” he slowly says, watching her expression, “I’m sorry but, she didn’t make it.” The girl’s expression doesn’t change – it’s blank, “I’ve called your father and he’s taking a flight right now to come and be with you.”

Annabella sits in the auditorium, writing in her journal. She should be in class right now, but she can’t be bothered. When her mind is thinking up of a new song, she doesn’t want to be paying attention to the lesson – she’ll lose her train of thought.

At that moment, the door to the auditorium opens, “Annabella?” comes the vice principal’s voice. “Are you here?” he spots her, “I have something to tell you – is it okay if I sit down?” he asks her.

“Go ahead.” She says, closing her journal.

“I have some news for you,” he runs his fingers through his thinning hair. “Something’s happened with your mother.”

The girl blinks. She’s untouched by the news; “Did she overdose?” is the first thing she says.

He stares at her. Throughout his years in working in a high school, he’s had to deliver all types of news to students – some good and some bad. He’s seen many different reactions, but none like Annabella’s, “I do not know,” he says, clearing his throat. “I was not informed on any details besides that she’s passed on.”

Annabella shrugs, “She did, then.”

“I’ve called your dad,” he says, getting up. “He should be here soon…”

Pete Wentz enters the familiar school, Patrick Stump right next to him. “It’s the same,” he softly whispers. He notices two girls sitting in the front office, “That’s them, right?” he swallows.

Patrick stares at the back of the strawberry blonde’s head, “I believe so.” He opens the office door. “Melody?” he softly calls her name, not wanting to frighten her.

“D-Dad?” she says in response, her voice slightly cracking.

He nods, “Your one and only,” he sits next to her. “I’m sorry.” He wraps an arm around her.

“Hey, Bella,” Pete weakly smiles at his daughter. He sits down next to her.

“She’s gone, isn’t she?” the girl sighs.

He doesn’t answer, “Let’s get going, alright?” he gets up. He holds out a hand for her.
