Chapter 1

I awoke to the sound of the doorbell ringing. I was at my desk, and my face was planted in a half-finished page of math homework. I shook my head. Recently, I had had that same fairy tale dream every time I slept.

"Morgan, get the door!" my mother yelled from the nearby hallway. "It's probably for you."

I rushed downstairs and opened the door. It was my two best friends in the world, Tiffany and Kendra.

"Happy birthday, Morgan!" they shouted at the same time.

I was so deep in thought about my dream that I had forgotten what day it was. "Thanks, guys," I said. "Come on in."

By the way, I thought I'd better introduce myself. My name is Morgan Anne Hubert, and I am seventeen as of today. I have wavy blonde hair, green eyes, and I'm very short. I don't look my age at all, and people mistake me for being twelve or thirteen all the time. It's something that I had gotten used to over the years.

"So, how are you?" Kendra asked as we settled around the table.

"I'm...okay," I said. I really wasn't feeling that well. Birthdays really weren't so special to me anymore. Today was just another day.

"Are you sure?" Tiffany asked. "You seem a little sad."

"Sad? No," I said. "It's just that...I keep having this dream, where-" The doorbell rang again. "I've got it!" I yelled, and ran back towards the door.

I opened the door, and practically fell over.

"MORGAN!!!" a high-pitched voice shouted.

Of everyone in the world, the person I probably hated the most was my cousin Leah. She was only fourteen, and she was very pretty for her age. The only thing that ever concerned her was boys, friends and shopping. I was forced to be nice to her, since she was my cousin and all, but I really and truly hated her.

"Hi, Leah," I said. She hugged me in a way that felt more like an attack.

"Are you excited! It's, like, your birthday! You get cake! And presents! Yay!"

"Uh, sure," I said. "Come inside. The party's just getting started."

Leah followed me inside. I thought to myself, if it weren't for my parents who forced me two do everything their way, I wouldn't have even invited that annoying little bitch.

I had better talk about my parents. They are absolute control freaks. I am not allowed to do anything my way if it contradicts what my parents think. There are too many examples of this for me to list.

"Guys, have you met my cousin Leah?" I said to my friends.

"No, but we've heard all about you!" Tiffany said. "Nice to meet you!"

"Oh, it's nice to meet you too!" Leah said, adding a giggle.

I smelled a faint scent of burning from a distance. "Uh, what's that-"

"Okay everyone, on a count of three! One, two, three...

My mom entered, carrying a chocolate cake with candles shaped like a 1 and a 7 on top. She placed it on the table.

"Make a wish and blow out the candles!" Kendra said.

I closed my eyes tightly, thought for an instant, and said to myself: I wish I could meet Brendon Urie.

Brendon Urie. Isn't that a beautiful name? Just the thought of him made me blush. I understood my dream perfectly. I was the maiden trapped in the attic, and Brendon was the prince. You see, he was the lead singer of a band called Panic at the Disco. I had never seen them, let alone met them, and yet, I had this feeling that Brendon and I were meant for each other. But girls like me and boys like him rarely ever fell in love. All I could do was dream.

"Is it time for presents yet?" Leah shouted.

"Leah, will you please-" I glared at her.

"Morgan, be nice to your cousin," my mother whispered in my ear. "Of course, it's time for presents!" she said at full volume.

"Ooh, yay! Open mine first, Morgan!" Leah said.

I took Leah's present, which was inside a pink, sparkly bag and was filled with pink tissue paper. I reached in, and the first thing I pulled out was a silver plastic tiara that was trimmed with pink fluffy stuff.

"What...is...this?" I said.

"It's a crown, for the birthday princess!" Leah said. She reached over, snatched it out of my hands and placed it on my head. "Don't you just feel like royalty?"

"Oh, yeah, sure," I said. "Thanks." I felt like a freak with that fluffy thing on my head.

"Keep going, there's more!" Leah said.

I reached into the bag once again, and pulled out something shaped like a DVD case that was wrapped in, you guessed it, pink paper. I unwrapped it, and sitting there, in my hands, was my worst nightmare.

"High School Musical?" I said. "But why did you-"

"I heard you had never seen it before, and I thought that you must have been missing out, so I got it for you! Isn't that great!?"

"Well, yeah, but I never really wanted to-"

"Morgan..." my mom whispered. "I know you don't want it, but she payed for it with her own money. Be nice. Say thank you."

"Oh, uh, thanks," I said. "Okay, next?"

"Open ours!" Tiffany shouted. "It's from both of us. We kind of cheaped out, but we think you'll like it."

Kendra handed me a card. I opened it. Inside the card, there was a picture of Brendon at his finest.

"Okay..." I said.

"Read the back!" Kendra said.

I flipped the picture around. On the back it said:
"Hey, sexy, happy birthday! Let's hang out sometime, okay? I can't wait to see you!
Love,
Brendon
xoxo"

I recognized Kendra's writing, and laughed a little. "Thanks, guys," I said. "That was kind of sweet."

Leah was looking over my shoulder. "Ooooh, he's cuuuute," she said. "How old is he?"

"He's twenty-one," I said. "That's way too old for you, Leah."

"If he's twenty-one, then he's too old for you, too," Leah said.

"Yeah, well, he's closer in age to me, so there," I said.

"Morgan, for the last time, be nice to your cousin!" my mom said, out loud this time.

"Mom, will you stop it?" My mom didn't respond to that. She was angry, I could tell.

"Now, what's left?" I said. There was only one present left on the table.

"It's from me and Dad," my mom said. "Open it."

I picked it up. It was something in a box. I opened it quickly. It was something I had always wanted.

"An iPod? Oh my God, thank you so much, Mom!" I hugged her.

"Oh, Morgan, you're so lucky!" Leah said. "I want an iPod soooo badly!"

"Leah, will you just shut u-" I stopped myself. I had heard enough from my mom already.

"Okay, guys, what are we waiting for?" Tiffany said. "Let's PARTY!"

"How about you put on your new movie, Morgan?" my mom said.

"Oh! Yes! Let's!" Leah shouted. "I can show you all the dance moves! We can dance along!"

"Sounds fun," I said sarcastically.

We all sat down on the couch as my mom put the DVD in the player. "Have fun, girls," she said, and left the room.

"Why do we have to watch this, honestly?" Kendra said. "There's probably something better on TV."

"Because my mom is a control freak," I said. "Because Leah is my cousin, and I have to respect her."

We were all quiet for a few seconds, watching Leah dance along to the movie.

"I'm bored already," Tiffany said. "No offense, Morgan, but this is really lame. How about we go for a walk in the park or something?"

"Yeah, that sounds fun," Kendra said. "More fun than this."

"I don't know about that," I said. "I mean, I'd love to, but it wouldn't go over well with my mom. It's getting dark out, and you know...there might be 'monsters' that could, you know, come out of the dark and 'get me'..."

"Ooooh, so scary," Tiffany said, rollng her eyes.

"Just ask your mom," Kendra said. "You always say that she's unpredictable, so maybe she'll let you."

"Okay," I said. I ran upstairs.

"Hey, mom..."

"What is it, Sweetie?"

"Kendra and Tiffany want to go to the park. Can I go with them?"

My mom paused for a second. "Absolutely not!"

"But why, Mom?"

"Morgan, it's getting dark! I don't want you getting lost, or attacked and raped, or killed! It's dangerous around here at night!"

"Mom, what are the chances of that ever happening?"

"Around here, very strong!"

"Fine, be that way!" I yelled. I ran back downstairs. Tiffany and Kendra were standing at the door.

"Hey, what did your mom say?" Kendra said.

"She freaked out at me," I said. "I got the talk about getting raped and killed and all that kind of wonderful stuff again."

"Oh, fun," Tiffany said. "Well, we're sorry, but we can't stand watching that stupid movie for any longer, so we're leaving. See you sometime soon, okay?"

"Um, sure," I said. "Bye guys."

They went out the door. I went back to the table, picked up my presents, and ran all the way to my room. I threw off my fuzzy tiara and collapsed on my bed.

A few seconds later, I picked up my picture of Brendon. I stood up and tacked it onto my wall. I stared at it deeply. His beautiful dark hair, his brown eyes, his luscious lips...my heart melted at just the sight of him.

"Oh, Brendon..." I said. I knew that talking to a picture on a wall basically qualified me as a freak, but I didn't care. "How I wish you could hear me. You don't know who I am, but you mean everything to me. My parents treat me like a posession, and my friends just don't care about me. They abandoned me at my own birthday party! In some strange way, you're like the only person I can trust..." My bedroom door opened without any warning.

"Who are you talking to?" my mom asked.

"Oh, um, it's for English class," I said. "Shakespeare."

"I see," my mom said. She looked at the picture on my wall. "Morgan, take that picture off your wall. I don't want to deal with holes in your wall."

"Mom, the picture's already there!" I said. "Taking it down won't get rid of the holes!"

"Don't be so rude to me!" my mom said.

"But I wasn't-"

"Morgan, you've been very rude and irritable all evening. Why don't you just get some sleep? You'll feel much better in the morning."

I didn't like obeying my mother exactly, but this time I really felt like I needed the sleep. "Alright," I said. "Goodnight."

"Goodnight, Sweetie," my mom said, and closed the door. I immediately collapsed on my pillow in tears. Some birthday this was.

aww, poor morgan. i am sorry that fictional me is a bad friend. D: the present was pretty cool though haha.
