1- Hell Home
It was pouring rain and the claps of thunder could be heard distinctively, the drops of rain rustled onto the roofs of Summerville, a town in the North of the UK. The name of the town was a mere pun and oozed irony; excitement and heat of the summer had died away (even though it lasted for only one month). It was now time for the New Year at school; a new year at school is seen differently to every person. Most students hope to achieve better grades or impress their teachers but for some, simple surviving for another year was seen as a huge achievement.

Mr Urie had set off for work, leaving Mrs Urie to take the full responsibility of handling or rather forcing her children to get to school and with the dismal weather outside, you could say that the weather pretty much reflected the atmosphere at the time.

"BRENDON AND GEORGE COME DOWN THIS INSTANT! YOU'RE BREAKFAST IS GETTING COLD", Mrs Urie called her sons. This was a daily routine she hated but had to do, but it was one of the only things in her life that gave her responsibility. Mrs Urie was a simple woman, but her face looked like it had told many lies and her evident wrinkles showed signs of previous hardships. Brendon and George were Mrs Urie's two sons and although they brought her joy and happiness on many occasions they were a pain. But then again, most boys of 15 and 17 were.

"Mum! I can’t find my D&G pants!" George yelled from upstairs. His mother never quite understood why she was spending £20 for undergarments every time they went shopping but apparently showing your pants from your trousers that hanged low was the new ultimate in. Getting ready was something that took a lot of time and effort for George, he always felt he had to look his best, even for school. George was a tall and quite skinny 16 year old, with light brown eyes and dark jelled back hair. After eventually finding the pants he wanted, he went downstairs feeling content that the D&G brand was showing and at the start of the New Year he was bound to look the best.

On the other hand, his brother, Brendon, was a completely different story all together. He walked downstairs in a uninterested, unbothered way. Having decided last minute to wear the band t-shirt he pulled out from under his bed and the tight black skinny jeans that were looking run down, he felt that he looked great. School was for learning anyway and who had he to impress? George had a gorgeous blonde haired beauty and well, Brendon hadn't ever liked the girls at his school. He had been called immature by his parents for the past 5 years of his life and as he grew in age, his mentality failed to do so. He was seen as an outcast at school and had a total of one friend.

Brendon seated himself at the far end of the breakfast table away from where his mother and brother were talking about school. Brendon and George shared many differences but the most prominent one was the fact that Brendon simply quivered at the thought of school whilst George loved being at school and being the centre of attention.

"So last year, I scored like 300 goals... and I got A’s in everything... so I'm sure I’ll nail it this year." George began boasting, but then again who could blame him? The guy never revised, yet managed great grades, he was captain of the football team and was the most popular at school. He had plenty to boast about.

Ignore.Ignore.
Brendon had learnt on these occasions to ignore as it only demolished his self esteem day by day when he listened to his ‘perfect’ brother. He knew he wasn't going to ever be as good as or better than his brother so ignoring him seemed like the best option. Things never change.

"George, this stuff looks really hard. I'm so scared, to y'know start.. like seriously what’s osmosis?" Brendon was flicking through his new biology text book and had made a promise to himself that he would try his ultimate best, even if that meant resulting to asking for his brother for help.
"I would explain it to you since I completely aced that exam, but I think your mind is too thick to comprehend, LOSER!" George began to stir up a fight.

Ignore.Ignore.
Brendon kept repeating the word in his head. The word was used on almost any occasion in his life that it had become a habit to say it aloud. When Brendon first discovered repeating 'ignore' at the tender age of 10, his father had even had the courtesy of saying that he was schizophrenic.
“You poor thing, did I upset you? Don’t get all schizo on me okay!?..” George knew his weak point, and he loved to abuse it and dwell on it as much as possible. However, George had better things on his mind at this point, he had a bus to catch and ‘Lola’, his most recent girlfriend he needed to ‘talk to’...But we all know what 'talk to' really meant.

Brendon remained seated still on the table staring at the book and trying to do some reading before his lesson.
"Brendon, if you haven't noticed, your brother left at least 10 minutes ago, you're going to be late for first day. I still can't understand why you're always late... you're attendance record is cringe worthy; you make me embarrassed to attend those parent evenings. Can't you just try to be like George?!" Brendon's mum never understood why he was late for school everyday and Brendon knew it would just embarrass her more if she knew the real reason.

"Yeah, I'm going mum. Wish me luck", he sighed whilst wearing his black All Star Converse. He then walked out of the house leaving his own personal ‘heaven’ and entering ‘hell’.

If this was a normal family, the mother would have demanded George to apologise. If this was a normal family, George would have helped or at least wished his brother good luck for the new school year. If this was a normal life, Brendon would be taking the bus to school rather than walking for half a mile.

But this isn't a normal house; hate, resentment, spite and guilt were just a few of lives turmoil’s this 15 year old endured. Everyday.

2- New People
Brendon began making his journey to school whilst vigorously kicking at his black and white striped messenger bag which was hung on his front. This was the everyday routine; walking to school carrying a bag that was almost half his body weight. The other daily routine was stopping in front of Ryan’s house.

Ryan was Brendon’s best friend, they had known one another for a good 10 years. Ryan was older than Brendon by only a month but he was very mature and a lot taller than Brendon. In a way, Brendon felt protected and safe when he was with Ryan. Conversation flowed easily between them and he could tell his friend anything.

Brendon rang the doorbell on the dark oak door, he really admired Ryan’s family and walking into Ryan’s house was always a pleasure. His mother was a top designer in houses and she never let the fact that she was now a widow get to her. Sometimes Brendon wished really hard that he could half the luck that Ryan was blessed with.

Ding Dong.

Ryan answered the door but someone seemed to be accompanied with him, someone that Brendon didn’t recognise.

“Who the hell is she?," Brendon looked disgusted at Ryan.

"Is this some kind of sick joke?” He stared and waited for some kind of answer.

“Hang on Jac, just give me one second” Ryan looked at Jac and opologised on the behalf of his friend; he couldn’t believe Brendon had embarrassed him like that in front of his first girlfriend.

“Brendon what the hell is wrong with you? She’s so beautiful, that gorgeous smile and—“

“She’s extremely ugly, why was she at your house anyway?”

“What’s got into you? I thought we were friends, friends support each other. I’ve been getting to know her over the past few weeks, I met her at that summer camp that you refused to go to. She’s really beautiful and really does get me.”

I thought I get you? What is this all about? Her coming out of your house? Wait till I tell your mum. I can’t believe you Ryan. You, you s-slept with her!” Brendon looked shocked, outraged and his head began to throb, it was too much too soon. His one ‘true’ friend had neglected him.

“Brendon, listen,” Ryan put both his arms on Brendon’s shoulder ensuring that they could share eye contact. He knew something was wrong and sometimes he forgot how immature Brendon was. After a while, Brendon slowly lifted his head and looked at him, forgiving him was too easy and the sad truth was that he forgiving and forgetting was the story of his life.

“She’s my girlfriend, she means the world to me now. Nothing happened last night. She came only five minutes before you got here. I promise.” Brendon knew he couldn’t have lied but he was still confused, ever since they became teenagers they made a pact never to like girls— after all Brendon’s brother had put both of them off because he was so promiscuous.

“You’re forgiven. I’m sorry for being such a jerk, I should understand.” Brendon faked an uneasy smile, but regardless of his best friends choice he could tell Jac was the new Brendon, he knew he was going to get replaced. However, maybe Ryan could be shared? He was certain his friend of 10 years couldn't just abandom him like this. Ryan gave Brendon some time to collect his feelings and when he thought he was ready, he heald Jac's hand and took her to Brendon.

“Jac, this is Brendon. Brendon, Jac.”

“Hey Brendon” Jac had the perfect voice to match her look, she was an elegant pretty girl, quite a bit shorter than Brendon and she was dressed in a skirt and flat pumps. She tried her best to make a good impression. Jac reached in to hug Brendon, she felt it was probably the best option. Her warm petite body made Brendon feel happy inside, but she didn’t belong to him. Nobody ever belonged to him.

“Thanks.. I-I’m B-Brendon.”

So whatever this seemed to now be, Brendon was comfortable with it. The three of them made their way to school and although two’s great, three’s a crowd.

3- Candyfloss

After the long, tedious half hour walk, they managed to arrive just on time. Brendon, Ryan and Jac went to see their new common room for the very first time, it was exactly as they had expected. Plenty of laughter, students were making coffee, gossiping and generally the atmosphere was great.

“Now, all students in Year 11 please collect your timetables!” This piece of paper was probably the most important thing they were going to receive, for one, this paper decided whether they’ll be together in the same classes. Upon receiving the paper they paused and stared at one another in a frightened way.

“Biology first thing?!” They all said the line at the same time, three was definitely not bad. They all broke into laughter.

“Don’t worry Jac and Bren, we’ll survive!” Ryan planted a kiss on Jac’s forehead and Brendon smiled at his two friends. Sure, he hated Biology but at least he’ll be enduring it with friends.Yes, friends. With a plural.

The biology room was very cosy indeed, but this wasn’t a good thing. The room didn’t have enough spaces and usually Brendon and Ryan shared a table but as Ryan now had Jac, Brendon had to skim the class for an empty seat.

Then.He.Saw.One.

He walked towards the desk that was occupied by one other person- a girl. She drew his attention almost automatically. Her hair was beautifully vibrant and long. Although it was bright pink this was a feature the facinated him, it looked just like the candyfloss you'd buy from the fair ground, so tasty, so perfect. Her clothes were just as unique too. Brendon looked down at how he had dressed and automatically regretted not putting in a greater effort. How was she ever going to notice him? Well at least he didn’t stink... (he had heard somewhere that it was the smell that put girls off the most). His negative thoughts weren’t going to get to him this time.

Ignore. Ignore.

With his new found positive attitude, he didn't hesitate to sit himself next to the girl who seemed to be deeply engrossed in sketching a picture to even notice he had joined her. He knew he had to make the first move.

“Hey, I haven’t seen you here before, I’m Brendon by the way.” Where had this new stroke of confidence come from? Ryan looked back at the table behind him, where Brendon was now seated. He winked at Brendon. It seemed like he approved of this girl, and that’s all Brendon needed.

“Oh hey there, I just moved here from Canada. This is sorta my first year in a high school like this. I'm sorry I never noticed you sitting here. I’m just doing some sketches, I kinda get lost in another world when I'm doing them! I guess we’re lab partners, eh? I’m Audrey by the way.” Her eyes glistened as she spoke and there was something about her that made Brendon want to get to know her even more.

“You’re art work is really cool, you’re so talented.” It fascinated him that someone could draw something as creative as Audrey’s work.

Although he would have preffered to chat for longer he was interupted by his new teacher, Mr Granger.
“Now class settle down! Today we’re going to do Osmosis!” The teacher walked into the classroom and automatically demanded attention.Biology made everyone moan however Brendon seemed to experience a different emotion.

Sure he was moaning inside, but something told him that he would get through it just fine this year.
