Pt1-Winter Passing

It all started out with a few words in a long distance phone call.
“I don’t want a lot for Christmas.”
We had repeated this phrase for weeks till I actually started making plans.
“I just want to be home for Christmas.” I said as I slid my last dime into the pay phone slot.
“But I’m not gonna be home in time for Christmas.”
“But you know I don’t want a lot that’s all I want.”
I could feel the wind chill in my bones as I stood outside the bus station.
“I’ll be there.” I told him and I hung up. Not wanting to hear his answer.
I needed some sort of miracle to look forward to.
The creaking city bus with red and brown stripes pulled up and I got aboard.
I paid the 1.25 fare and took a seat in the back.
This bus passed by the high school I used to go to.
The houses we used to party.
The mall where we used to skip to.
I rang the bell to get off the bus.
I would have to walk from here. Because no busses went there.
No busses go to your part of town.
The houses are more glamorous here and the stories about those who live in them twice as scandalous.
I get to your door.
And there’s a wreath hanging around the peephole.
It’s a fresh, real wreath. Not that shredded plastic that has an off smell.
Its new.
I recall something you said from one of our nightly conversations.
“I’m starting new.”
I take the golden ring door knocker in my hand and I slam it against the door.
I step back and wait to see if anyone answers.
“Yes?” a boy who is not you asks.
But he’s beautiful and I’m cold so I’m speechless.
“Are you here for the party?” the boy asks me kindly. I notice he’s wearing a reindeer headband.
I nod. Just wanting to get in from the cold.
“What’s your name?” the boy asks closing the door behind us.
“I’m Mae.” I say.
“I’ll go get Jon for you.” The boy says. I guess my name sounds familiar.
