Someone emailed me about doing a short little interview about the P!ATD Book! Club for a school paper so I figured I would post it here so you guys could read it as well.

1. When was the Book Club started?
i believe it was started late in 2005, around the time Panic! at the Disco released their album A Fever You Can't Sweat Out

2. How many members are there?
i would say there are close to 30 members, but that number just keeps growing.

3. Who started it? (was it you?)
it was started by Ryan Ross and Panic! at the Disco. i took over in march/april '06

4. Was it actually the band’s idea?
yes

5. What was the first book the club read?
it was a book reccommended by Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy - The Heart is Decietful Above All Things by L.T. Leroy

6. How many books have you read? Which are they?
Other than the first, there have been 2 others. we are currently voting on the 4th book. The previous books were:

A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby
A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess

7. What is the discussion usually like?
Discussions are usually broken down to a few chapters per week spanning over a 4 - 6 week period. There is also a general discussion that opens up halfway through each book for those who have already finished it.

8. Do any band members ever participate or leave comments or is it a fans-only community?
Up until about March, guitarist/writer Ryan Ross was pretty active with it, opening up discussions, commenting, etc. but since the boys have been non-stop touring for the past year, it's been much harder for him to keep up with it due to a hectic schedule. He does still pop in and take a look around to see whats going on and/or gets updates from me.

9. Why do you think that Panic! At the disco has had such a particular influence on their fans?
i really think that when you have a band like Panic! at the Disco with a writer behind it like Ryan Ross who is very much influenced by literature, you get a very different perspective on quite basic situations. i mean, if you look at some of the lyrics that he has written, it's not the same old "oh, my bleeding heart" kind of thing. its much deeper than that, almost to a level where each song is a short story in itself. its not easy to paint pictures and scenarios with words, especially when you only have 4 or 5 minutes to do so, and with Ross it seems to come very naturally and i think thats part of what really sets Panic! at the Disco apart from everyone else out there.

10. What’s the best part of the Book Club in your opinion?
to me, the best part is that fans can come discuss books with one another - people of similar age and interest - without feeling sort of out of place. i think it definitly helps people to open up more and put their thoughts and ideas out there when they feel comfortable and i'd say for them to know that they each share at least one common thread (P!ATD), it makes things a little more welcoming.

You don't need to be a heroin addict or a performance poet to experience extremity. You just have to love someone.
