Does anyone else here read Terry Pratchett? If so, what are your favorite books from the DiscWorld series?

I've read a couple of books from this series, but am pretty behind on a lot of them and am trying to figure out which one to tackle next. So far I've really enjoyed all of them, but my favorites were The Fifth Elephant and The Truth.

Someone I used to know was absolutely obsessed with these books so I thought I would give them a go - I read The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic, and I guess I'd say they were OK, they didn't really grip me or anything, but then I read Mort and I absolutely loved it, so that has made me want to keep trying with the series. Which one would you recommend I read next?

Well, I've only read a couple and I wouldn't say that I was obsessed with them. They're amusing and I enjoy picking them up when I need something lighthearted -- you know, if you've had a really rough week and need a pick me up?

I've read:
-Mort
-Reaper Man
-Soul Music
-Wyrd Sisters
-Equal Rites
-Witches Abroad
-The Fifth Elephant
-The Truth
-Monstrous Regiment

...lol, listing them off now, it seems like a lot. There were a few in there that I really didn't get into. Like, I adored Mort -- but then all of the rest of the Death ones that I've read (Reaper Man and Soul Music) felt a bit flat.

I really got into The Fifth Elephant, The Truth, Wyrd Sisters and Monstrous Regiment.

I think that a lot of it has to do with what exactly the book is parodying and how much I like that subject matter. I was honestly a bit bored with Equal Rites, but then I was never a really big feminist. Whereas with Wyrd Sisters, I've been innundated with 'wiccan' friends and have had an extensive theater background so a book that parodied witches and theater all in one go had me cracking up. Same with Witches Abroad, which involved language, travel, fairy tales, voodoo, etc.

I guess if I were to recommend a second book for you, I'd say either Monstrous Regiment or The Fifth Elephant.

By the way, what about The Light Fantastic and The Colour of Magic didn't you like? I haven't read them yet, and I'm thinking of just skipping them if they are the sort that fall short of fantastic.

I wouldn't say that I didn't like TLF and TCOM, they just didn't grip me in the way that I thought they would, from the way everyone goes on about them.
I agree with you about Equal Rites - I've read the first few pages of that so many times and just not been able to get into it, I've finally given up lol.
I seem to have Sourcery on my bookshelf, I might give that a go sometime, it's been a while since I read Mort.

I adore the Discworld novels. I especially love Death, so the books that feature him rock my socks. I think if I chose one favorite it'd be Hogfather both because it features Death and because it's set in a "Christmas" atmosphere. I'm a sucker for Christmas. I also really like Thief of Time; I've read most of the books, so it's a lot to compare.

I love the Terry Pratchett novels, and I've read a ton.
My favorites are:
Night Watch
Monsterous Regiment
Going Postal
Thud
Theif of Time (the best one with Death)
The Fifth Elephant
Moving Pictures

Another really good book by pratchett is Good Omens with Neil Gaimen, but its not in discworld.

If you're just starting on these, I'd chose one of the simple ones, like Gaurds! Gaurds!

But the ones about Ricewind I can never get into.

I have read all of them, except the new one (Wintersmith I think its called - but hopefully I'm getting and for Christmas) and I think Sourcery.

I personally love all of the Sam Vimes and the Death books, so I would recommend any of them, but especially the Hogfather and Nightwatch. Going Postal is also good. And Carpe Juggulem. Hell, I just like all of them! My advice is pick one at random, if you don't like it, pick another. Big Grin

Just because I'm Paranoid, doesn't mean They're not out to get me!
