My book had these discussion points in the back of the book:
- 'Good editors don't see bark, they see leaves' What do you think the author means by this when she introduces us to Frank Curry, Camille's editor? - 'The Victorians... needed a lot of room to stray away from each other.... to avoid rapacious lust, to wall themselves away from sticky emotions. Extra space is always good.' How much does Adora's home add to the problem? Would a two-room apartment have helped? - 'Natalie was buried in the family plot, next to a gravestone that already bore her parents' names. I know the wisdom, that no parents should see their child die, that such an event is like nature spun backward. But it's the only way to truly keep your child. Kids grow up, they forge more potent allegiances. They find a spouse or lover. They will not be buried with you. The Keenes, however, will remain the purest form of family. Underground.' Macabre but true? - 'Outside on the porch I saw a changeling.' How do you feel about Amma? Is she a changeling in the traditional sense of the word. Or a chameleon forced to adapt to her unnatural environment? - 'When you die, you become perfect. I'd be like Princess Diana. Everyone loves her now.' Is Amma right? Does this apply in hte world of Wind Gap? In our lives is this true also? - Do you think there is any significance to the letter A in Sharp Objects? Think of Camille's family in particular. - 'I'm here. I don't usually feel tha I am.' How has Camille's past shaped her? Do you agree with her shrinks that her 'weightlessness' is due to her ignorance of her history? - '"Oh, now look what you've done. I'm bleeding." My mother held up thorn-pricked hands, and trails of deep red began to roll down her wrists.' What does this image in Camille's mind tell us of her view of her mother. - 'I jammed a floppy blue teddy bear under my head, then felt guilty and returned him to the foot of the bed. One should have allegiance to one's childhood things.' How else does Camille's allegiance manifest itself? Would she be better without it, or do you agree with her? - How important do you think the outward appearance of the people in Sharp Objects is to their personalities. Ugliness and beauty are themes throughout the book, but are they the key themes? Or do the characters rise above the visual? - 'A ring of perfect skin.' One on Camille's back and another on her mother's wrist. What significance does this have do you think? How alike are they? - 'Sometimes I thiknk illness sits inside every woman, waiting for the right moment to bloom.' How do you agree with this? Can you see how Camille has come to think this? |

-Oh wow, I really don't mind what she meant by that quote..I don't know. I'd be curious to see what others have to say.
-I think the house allows everyone to get away and kind of be on their own, but in the context of the story, it's kind of good. Yes, smaller house means less places to hide things, but I still don't think it would change much. It might've been worse. - In a sense it's true. It's very morbid and them growing up doesn't mean you lost them, but I get the idea, yeah. -I don't know what changeling means, exactly. haha So i'm not sure. - I don't think it applies in Wind Gap, because people talked nasty about Ann and Natalie when they were dead. I think, in the world as a whole, its kind of true in a lot of ways, esp. if the person is famous like Princess Di. You remember and honor the good and they seem like a legend of sorts. - I guess in the names..Amma, Adora..they are the ones that killed people in the book. Ann was one of the ones killed and she had an A. I guess it might have a little signifance. - I think her past made her feel outside from everyone. I don't believe she ever felt truly wanted and like she belonged, so the weightlessness might be from that..she doesn't fully feel alive, perhaps? I guess her history with her mom and all that affected her greatly as well. -I am not sure exactly really - I think she would be better without it, so she could really see what was happening more, perhaps, but I can't think of anything else she held allegiance too...Marian's memory...but I'm not sure exact parts. - I think they rise above it all. Amma is beautiful, but she was the main villian, if you will and I think Camille becomes a strong person, and she finds herself kind of ugly b/c of her scars. - One on her mom's wrist? I'm confused. - I see how she comes to think this because of what she's witnessed, but I don't agree. I don't think it's inside every woman nor every man. |
