So chapter IX was totally crazy and I had a really hard time reading it. That stuff about the queen and the bull, yawn. All the side notes I didn't even read half of them. Plus more names. Holloway shooting Wax and Jed was messed up and I found it very distracting that it happened with all the other stuff going on. I would have preferred to read it straight forward. It was like hidden in the chapter, which maybe was the point.

I thought it was cool the squares that were obviously see through with text backwards on the other side, but it was still a distraction from Holloway, Jed and Wax. And the words in the boxes seemed meaningless.

I did like his ghost, being the domed ceiling and a real girl. I also liked the part about the truck hitting him, but not really. He's losing his mind.

Oh and Hailey said she was sad Johnny disappeared, what? what does that mean?

Chaper X was much much better. I was confused about Rexton getting out of his wheelchair.

House = mental state of the indivudual...I thought that was absolutely brilliant.

On page 183 did you have a . on the page? I don't know if this was text or if it was just a fleck that happened to get on my book.

i actually liked the stuff about the minotaur. not necessarily in this book because i hated how it disrupted the navidson story when all i wanted was to know what was going to happen. but i do love the mythology and i never thought of it like that.

you know what i didn't see coming-holloway flipping out like that. i didn't understand what he meant by "As he chambers a sixth round, a glimmer of joy glickers across Holloway's features, as if something about that place has begun to make sense." but what sense could he possibly make? it's darkness-you have to interpret it to mean whatever because it's all the same. i can't explain the growl but i think it's a creature for him because that's what he made it. i wish i could find the other quote that i really liked. [okay damn it, i can't find it].

i think my favorite thing in the whole book was when jed (i think) said that if you forget about something in that dark it disappeared. i guess it kind of ties in with the whole house=mental state of the individual but that kind of annoyed me a little bit because it's predictable. i would have guessed that from the beginning. if he hadn't been insisting that the house really does this and goes through all of these owners i would have been rationalizing the shit out of it. i guess because they set you up to believe that something serious was wrong with the house it's kind of disappointing that so far nothing has really happened that i couldn't have guessed in the beginning. well, that's phrased wrong but i can't think of better words to say that. it's like if you think of the implications of darkness-unknown, endless, easy to lose yourself...

aww johnny's ghost. that made me fall instantly in love with him because i'm stupid like that. i can't find the quote about the kind of girl that would love him for what he is but i loved that. i wonder if all of the sex stories are made up just to make himself feel better. ooh and was the part about his scars in this section? any thoughts on it because it didn't feel right to me.

ah you think he might be going insane too. idk. the whole time i was struggling with this. it's possible, especially later on where it's like woah he is off the deep end. he has the genetics for it and it wouldn't come as a shock. but then there's also the stories that he makes up. and he's so afraid of going insane or of something bad happening that he's probably making himself sick. once he finds out about his screaming at night he goes crazy.

yeah, the dot is there. no clue what it means. i think reston is able to use his arms when he's out of the wheelchair.

was tom's story part of this section?

"the bookclub. we go there."

"People who claim that they’re evil are usually no worse than the rest of us. It’s people who claim that they’re good, or anyway better than the rest of us, that you have to be wary of."

OMG I forgot that part and it was one of mine too!!! Crazy about the buttons gone missing and the velcro and stuff! I loved that!!!

In this section his scars were from boiling oil spilling on his arms. And it was such an afterthought in that paragraph I actually had to go back and read it again, wait I thought, that's significant information.

I was wondering if he would audio tape himself while he was sleeping just to find out what he was saying and how he was screaming.

No, Tom's story wasn't in this section.

yeah that's pretty much the whole story right? it was the story of how the oil got onto his arms. the kettle corn that he was trying to catch. something about that doesn't feel right to me.

he doesn't do that. it would make sense but he's going crazy.

goddamn it, i was in the basement doing laundry and thinking about the growling noise because it was right after i posted before and my mom came and scared me.

Yay! Slacker here!

Oh, the Minos thing was boring, since I knew the story, but I read it anyway. Are those the side notes with the list of a billion names? I didn't read the names, I read the others. I loved the way the words wee mirror image- it took me a while because I thought it was some type of funky language. I'll go check my copy...my 183 has text starting "when they finally...anything during the night" one of the ones with the text only at the bottom. He should audio tape himself.

Oh, I'd be so afraid if I put something down and it disappeared. How come mine doesn't have the dot? Maybe it's on a different page in mine. What's it after?

Hum...Is this the section with the funky text that I had to read with my mirror? It was a side not thing, and I had to run, get my mirror to read it. And the section with the test all upside down and everywhere/ I liked that.

wait, now I'm confused. My 183 doesn't have the dot, right? But my book's chapter X ends oh 245...interesting. What edition does everyone have? (Mine's the Full Color one- ISBN 0-375-70376-4)?

Denise: Oh, that is weird. No clue. Yeah, it wasn't anything really important, just more names and all.
