I couldn't fint a topic specifically for him so I though, "Hey, why not?"
I'm currently reading Cannary Row by John Steinbeck. So I was just wondering is anyone else a fan. He wrote amazing books. Of Mice and Men. The Red Pony. East of Eden. The Grapes of Wrath. He was a winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962. Alot of his books are based on the Great Depression era. So if you read his books what do you think? And if you haven't you need to read at least one. “Experience is the name every one gives to their mistakes.” - Oscar Wilde "What care I for all the money in the world.... when I have no pockets." - Tommy Tiernan www.myspace.com/suzie_k |

i loved Of mice and men. i've read it twice. it's really short too, so if you don't like it, it won't take too long to get through.
i have to start reading grapes of wrath for school..which i'm NOT excited about... |

The Grapes of Wrath is a great read.
I know when you have to read a book for school, you have to rush it and because it's work you don't really get to enjoy it. But it's well worth the read. “Experience is the name every one gives to their mistakes.” - Oscar Wilde "What care I for all the money in the world.... when I have no pockets." - Tommy Tiernan www.myspace.com/suzie_k |

Oh gosh. The Grapes of Wrath just about killed me. Of Mice and Men is really good though. And not just because it's 1/8 the size of Grapes.

But after reading it did you not feel acomplished. It took me about 2 weeks to get through it. And that felt like a fucking age.
But I loved it. It really shows the struggle and hardship of the time. “Experience is the name every one gives to their mistakes.” - Oscar Wilde "What care I for all the money in the world.... when I have no pockets." - Tommy Tiernan www.myspace.com/suzie_k |

I hate the ending of "Of Mice And Men" Why oh why...

I thought that too.
It's is soo sad. But the thing I find with Steinbeck is that nothing ever turns out the way you want it to. I guess it's more true to life. His way of saying everything doesn't have a happy ending. “Experience is the name every one gives to their mistakes.” - Oscar Wilde "What care I for all the money in the world.... when I have no pockets." - Tommy Tiernan www.myspace.com/suzie_k |

Well, Grapes of Wrath sure ended really oddly, so I'm not sure that was really very realistic. I mean, it was metaphorical and stuff, I guess, but I would never consider it as realistic.
OM&M just doesn't have a happy ending because you could kind of tell early on that you-know-who (cause I don't want to ruin the ending for those of you who haven't read it yet) couldn't really survive in the kind of environment that he lived in. Steinbeck's books are realistic in concept, but not necessarily in their portrayals. ----------------------------------------------- "I'm easy like a Sunday morning." |

Ok yeah, up until the ending of Grapes of Wrath it's pretty realistic.
But at the same time I could see the ending happening. I mean yeah, it's probably wouldn't happen today but desperate times and all. Plus society then was immensely different from todays. If it were a toss to save someone’s life you'd do it. I think without question. “Experience is the name every one gives to their mistakes.” - Oscar Wilde "What care I for all the money in the world.... when I have no pockets." - Tommy Tiernan www.myspace.com/suzie_k |

i really liked of mice and men. the ending was sad.. but i liked how it ran parallel to [you know.. that part earlier in the book....would rather not spoil].
idk.. that book was sad.. and i havent thought about it's context for like two years. but i think i want to buy/read it again.. awesomeness. ----- Panic! at the Bookclub-"Did you see that guy's ass party": Checking out the asses of guys in between book discussions since 2007. |

I mean, obviously, if I were in such a situation, that wouldn't have been much of a sacrifice for me or anything. It's just a weird way to save someone's life, is all. This message has been edited. Yeah but again it was a sign of the era it was written about.
It's not like they could have ran into a shop and bought what they needed. And that what I think he was trying to show. It was the hardship and sacrafice of the times. “Experience is the name every one gives to their mistakes.” - Oscar Wilde "What care I for all the money in the world.... when I have no pockets." - Tommy Tiernan www.myspace.com/suzie_k |

Generally, his books are okay. They seem to be slow reads for me, but I do enjoy them. He also wrote "The Pearl" which is definitely a little sad, but I would still recommend it to anyone.
